According to Buildings Department expediter Richard Nagan and the President of the National Lawyers Guild – New York City Chapter (NLG-NYC), Gideon Oliver protesters were right. Closing Liberty Plaza (Zuccotti Park) by the NYPD this weekend was “totally illegal. The zoning resolution and the special permit call for the plaza to be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.”
Gideon told the Village Voice, “It was unconstitutional, but it also violated city laws because it’s a privately-owned public space and it can’t be closed without going through city zoning process and that didn’t happen here.”
Protesters said on the website of Occupy Wall Street that it was time for another “Solidarity Sunday”.
They asked other protesters around the country to use “Solidarity Sunday” and express their support by organizing a march or vigil on 3/18/12 at a local police station to express their discontent with the police oppression.
