Sunday, November 4, 2012. New York City – Runners and volunteers from the “NYC Marathon Of Relief Effort 2012” went to Staten Island, Coney Island and the Rockaways to help people affected by hurricane Sandy.

A group of them met in Grand Army Plaza, at the entrance of Prospect Park and they ran and rode their bicycles to Coney Island. When they got to Coney Island, the National Guard told them that they didn’t need more volunteers, so some of them stayed in Coney Island and some others went to Far Rockaway.

I had the opportunity to talk with Larry Lewis. He was going to run the New York City Marathon. Larry told Mario Fraioli in 2011, “something would have to happen to me where I couldn’t walk. I wouldn’t even let my career interfere with breaking the streak.”

I took these pictures at Grand Army Plaza, Coney Island and Far Rockaway. There were other volunteers in Coney Island and Far Rockaway helping victims of Sandy, too.

According to a press release by the group, “With the NYC Marathon now canceled, a group of runners and volunteers are now shifting their focus to helping the huge effort of recovery that lies ahead. “We have trained for a marathon and we intend to put one on. But instead of a foot race, we want a marathon of service. We continue to draw on the spirit of endurance to turn this day into real action,” said Jaclynn Larington, co-founder of “NYC Marathon Of Relief Effort 2012″”.

On their website www.nycmore2012.org they says, “A marathon is not about winning. It is about finding something inside you, you never knew you had and inspiring others to do the same.

NYC Marathon Of Relief Effort 2012 (NYCMORE2012.org) is about turning a day that was devoted to a race into an all-day volunteer opportunity.”
