Support Frontline Puerto Rican Communities in the Recovery from Hurricane Maria.

“The devastating effects of hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico are still unfolding, but one thing is certain—the island’s most vulnerable communities are likely to be pummeled the hardest and face the longest road to recovery.

Low-income communities of color often face the worst destruction and slowest recovery and have fewer resources to safeguard homes, vehicles, and other property. When the winds die down and the floods recede, these communities are often forgotten by reconstruction efforts, and underserved by insurance companies.

The Hurricane Maria Community Relief & Recovery Fund will be housed at the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD). One hundred percent of monies raised will be used to support immediate relief, recovery, and equitable rebuilding in Puerto Rico for the communities hit hardest by the storm. The Fund is governed by organizations like Puerto Rico-based Taller Salud, the G8 of Caño Martín Peña, and other local, grassroots organizations. The Fund will support organizations working with these hardest hit communities in Puerto Rico.”_ MariaFund.org

Responding to national pressure, Trump waives the Jones Act for Puerto Rico, effective immediately. Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke says the waiver will be in effect for 10 days. After the 10-day period, the waiver can be extended if needed.

It’s time to ABOLISH the Jones Act!

Wednesday, September 27, 2017. New York City. I had the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico a few days after hurricane Irma. I returned to the United States of America a few days before hurricane Maria affected Puerto Rico.

Boricuas treated me very well. I met a great driver who took me to different places in the island. If you are traveling to Puerto Rico and need a driver, send me a private message and I will give you his info. I also met Lina Mercedes. She is a great artist. Support her. Buy her art here.

My thoughts are with people affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands. I and other people are ready to help you. We are in this together.

This is a list of organizations that are helping Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands. Please donate today. If you have questions, please call the organizations for more information.

Hurricane Maria relief: how New Yorkers can help Puerto Rico and other disaster victims.

Puerto Rico is facing a humanitarian crisis after Hurricane Maria ripped through the island last week. Humanitarian aid isn’t reaching the island quickly enough, and 3.4 million residents are running low on essentials like food, clean water, and fuel.

Click here to see where you can donate critically-needed supplies across each of NYC’s five boroughs.

“After a week of canceled flights and a waiting list for any viable ones a mile long, PETA’s Animal Rescue Team chartered its own flight and is in on the ground in Puerto Rico, where Hurricane Maria has caused catastrophic flooding, leaving an estimated 3.4 million people without power and endangering an unknown number of humans, dogs, cats, and other animals. The members of the team, who have chartered a plane to fly them to the devastated island, consist of staff members trained in animal emergencies—all equipped with supplies and rescue gear and some who recently returned from Hurricane Harvey rescue operations in Texas and Louisiana.”

This is a message sent by Robert Becker. Robert is a member of “Our Revolution.”

“Having lived in Vieques, Puerto Rico for over a decade I’ve seen the challenges the island faces, but few can compare to rebuilding that will need to occur after Hurricane Maria. Due to austerity measures forced on them by the vulture funds holding their debts, families were left without the necessary infrastructure to weather these recent storms. Irma has already cost $1 billion, and now Puerto Rico is facing the worst with Maria.

Maria was the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in almost a century, and has severed communications and crushed its aging electricity infrastructure. San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz has indicated it may take up to six months just to restore power to the island’s 3.5 million residents.

Please consider contributing to the organizations below to help Puerto Rico rebuild in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria:

Taller Salud. A feminist grassroots organization that supports health in frontline communities, specifically focused on the communities in Loiza. This town has a high population of low income people of color who suffer the most during natural disasters.

Help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria. Contributions made to this crowd-funding effort will go to several Puerto Rico-based organizations.

Friends of Puerto Rico. A DC-based nonprofit run by people of the Puerto Rican diaspora that funds arts, education and culture. They have launched a campaign to send money to Puerto Rico.

ConPRmetidos. An organization that aims to connect Puerto Ricans from across the world to build Puerto Rico as a global economy.

Vulture funds have exploited Puerto Rico’s economic woes and forced millions of people to suffer: 45% of Puerto Ricans live in poverty, including 56% of the children. Thousands of people are fleeing the island for the mainland United States every week, where threadbare social safety nets are still better than what can be provided locally under the cruel policies of austerity. Puerto Ricans are Americans, but are not always treated as such. It is a cruel reminder of our colonial history.

The local Our Revolution group is dedicated to rectifying these injustices and more, but they need your help.

I have no doubt that Puerto Rico will weather this storm and come back stronger than ever, to fight with us for a future of racial, economic, social, and environmental justice.

In solidarity,

Robert Becker
Former Iowa Director, Bernie 2016″

This message is from Adriana Gonzalez, Environmental Justice Organizing Representative, Sierra Club Puerto Rico Chapter.

” It’s impossible to overstate the horror of what’s happening in my home of Puerto Rico right now. The worst storm to hit our island in 80 years has utterly destroyed us.

After taking out our entire power grid, submerging entire neighborhoods in contaminated water and killing nearly a dozen people, Hurricane Maria has now threatened the Guajataca Dam with collapse…

The Sierra Club is working with community-based partners in emergency relief efforts, including our Puerto Rico Chapter. These groups are working to create resilient communities that will transform our island — building community microgrids so people have cleaner power that won’t take 6 months to bring back online, ensuring building codes are met so coastal homes are safer from flooding, and so much more.

I won’t lie — the situation here is as frightening as I could imagine. The empathy and generosity of Sierra Club members like you keeps me going; we have a long, difficult road ahead, but knowing you’re with us gives us all hope.”

“Hurricane Maria left a trail of destruction through the Caribbean, just two weeks after Hurricane Irma devastated the area. Maria battered Dominica, leaving at least 15 dead, before crossing through the U.S. Virgin Islands as a Category 5 phenomenon. Then the storm made landfall in Puerto Rico Wednesday morning as a Category 4, the first one of that strength to hit the U.S. territory since 1932.”

Washington, DC –Today (9/26/2017), Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement that the federal government will waive regulations requiring local matching funds from Puerto Rico for FEMA disaster relief:

“By granting a waiver for federal cost-sharing requirements, the people of Puerto Rico will be able to receive aid from FEMA without further digging into an already devastated local economy. This is something I requested in a letter to DHS yesterday.

“The President’s decision is belated and not enough. The waiver only applies for the next 180 days and, given the scope of this crisis, this period will not be sufficient. The President should extend this period to one year, at minimum. In addition, there should be a similar waiver of local matching funds granted for longer term, non-emergency federal assistance.

“In addition, the President must waive the Jones Act for one year. The aftermath of Hurricane Maria is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis. Puerto Ricans are without food, clean water and electricity. We must use every tool at our disposal to channel assistance to the Island.”
