Monday, October 16, 2017. New York City – The 10th Annual Indigenous Day of Remembrance was yesterday, Sunday, October 15, 2017. The event was organized by Luis Ramos.
The Indigenous community and their allies in New York City demand the removal of the Christopher Columbus statue from Columbus Circle. In its place, Indigenous people want to have a statue of a Lenape family. They also want to change the name of “Columbus Circle” for “Indigenous Circle.”

“10th Annual Indigenous Day of Remembrance came and left like the others but the honoring, ceremony, and resistance continues. Each year of ceremony takes on its own character and face. This year we gathered a week later from the Columbus Holiday and in the midst of a controversial Mayoral Commission pending a decision if Columbus Monument should come down.
I mentioned that this could be the last gathering if the statue should come down yesterday. Most objected because there is still much to teach about the Indigenous cultures here in NYC and the country. I agree. A once a year gathering is too little for a colossal cause to bring down the statue. We need to step up our efforts to be recognized. A lot of work ahead. I am one that will wait to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day in NYC but not yet. I owe it to my ancestors back home in the Caribbean and the Lenape ancestors of this land of Manahata (my personal opinion). Power to all those states that fought and Won to have Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated.
I am always grateful to see some great folks come out and dedicate 4-5 hours of standing and listening to the voices of so many indigenous peoples who dare to take a stand against misguided Euro-centric historical narratives.
Thanks Dee and Tina for your thoughts and work on the certificate of appreciation, and Eagle and Condor Community Center for the support and a great movie night on Friday; Brooke, Anastasia, & Leo. Many thanks to Dan Vea and Javier Soriano for capturing the moment once again through the power of the lens.
Thank you to all those individuals and families that came out through the years. It all started with a permit denial from NYC Parks from meeting at Columbus Circle Monument to being given Merchants Gate to 10 years later.
Time to educate and grow community not just once a year but ongoing.”

1496
Many years ago
-a man named Christopher Columbus
sailed the ocean blue in 1492.
A proud Indigenous people
the Taino stood in his midst with nothing but peace and respect.
But then Chris sold his soul
for an ounce of gold;
He is forever remembered as
El Cabron y Ladron.
He stoled, raped, and plundered!
But Like thunder we now show
his shame and reclaim our flame
of resistance and existence.
Doctrine of Discovery is a Papal Bull
that burns to ashes as the Empire falls;
Now we answer the ancestral call.
So let’s raise our fists in resistance
because we have a right to an existence.
They call us Mestizo Hispanic Latino
but We are Taino.
The Academics and Museums say we don’t exist because we didn’t keep the ways of 1496.
Does not matter if we have
Brown White Black Freckled skins;
or Straight Corn Braid hairs;
the air still smells sweet as we persist;
with our fists thrown high as we resist.
We fight for our right to exist!
