(Video from inside) CUNY BARUCH – Students protest the tuition hike proposed; 35% increase over 5 years. That is an annual three hundred dollar increase per year!
I took this info from the facebook event page:
Students United for a Free CUNY will be organizing campuses for militant demonstration and action Monday against the Board of Trustees vote at Baruch College. DETAILS WILL BE FORTHCOMING BY TONIGHT. 15 people were arrested last night as cops attacked students attempting to enter the public hearing of the Board of Trustees at Baruch College. Besides 15 people being arrested, many were beaten by batons as struggle broke out between students and the police.
The Board of Trustees are pushing forward with an agenda which would transform the whole of the university into something unrecognizable to ourselves. Central to all this is CUNY will pricing out students, raising tuition by 300 dollars a year for the next 5 years.
We’re calling on all students, youth, and people of our communities to come out to fight against the white-supremacist and elitist agenda of the Board of Trustees.
A CUNY Hunter College student from Students United for a Free CUNY puts forward the coalition’s demands to the Board of Trustees.
From Speech:
-“Finally, we demand that you reform CUNY’s governance. All major decisions at CUNY, especially curriculum changes like the proposed “Pathways Project,” should be made by a “People’s Board of Trustees,” to be elected by students, faculty, staff, and community members. The current board represents the interests of the wealthy who comprise it and the politicians who appoint it, not the people of CUNY. Like I said before, CUNY saved my life and I will be dedicatedto saving CUNY.”
