Friday, June 27th, 2014. New York City – Today was the 10th Annual NYC Trans Day of Action for Social and Economic Justice.

Audre Lorde Project said after the rally and march, “Thanks to the over 1,000 of you that rolled out this afternoon!”

“This is the tenth year that Audre Lorde Project and our partner organizations have rallied for justice and visibility for trans and gender non-conforming people of color in New York City and in our movements,” said Cara Page, Audre Lorde Project Executive Director. “Even though we have witnessed unprecedented media attention on transgender issues, but policing and violence against trans and gnc people is increasing exponentially.”

According to a recent report by the Anti-Violence Project, in 2013, there was a 21% increase in reports of physical hate violence against LGBT people, 89% of LGBT homicide victims were people of color and 72% were trans women.

The 2014 Trans Day of Action calls for the end of such hate violence and highlights other issues facing the trans and gender non-conforming community, including: criminalization and incarceration, healthcare access, economic justice, and affordable housing.

Lourdes Hunter, a member of TransJustice a program of the Audre Lorde Project, created by and for Trans and Gender Non-Conforming People of Color, who has been actively involved since the beginning, declares, “I’m not fighting for equality, I’m fighting for liberation!”

I will be covering the 44th PRIDE March on Sunday, June 29, 2014. The first March was held in 1970 and has since become an annual civil rights demonstration. Over the years its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to illness, violence and neglect.
