Friday, February 20th, 2015. New York City – Yesterday, Thursday, February 19th, a group of animal-rights activists were at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, to protest against the Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus for the use and abuse of animals.
Temperatures were below zero, but that did not stop protesters from attending the opening of the circus.
Demonstrators say that animals do not belong in circuses.
The organizations that attended the rally were PETA, Animal Defenders International, CompassionWorks International, Friends Of Animals United NJ (FAUN), NYCLASS, Long Island Orchestrating for Nature – LION, GooseWatch NYC, Cynthia King Dance Studio, Manhattan Young Democrats and others.
In an interview with Mike Clifford from the Public News Service, Ashley Byrne, campaign specialist with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said undercover video taken within the last five years documents harsh treatment of circus animals.
“Photos that were taken inside Ringling Brothers’ baby elephant training center reveal how baby elephants are jabbed with sharp bull hooks,” she said. “To force them to perform tricks out of fear of punishment.”
