Friday, October 20, 2017. New York City – On Saturday, October 19, 1867, visitors were welcomed in Prospect Park for the first time. Yesterday, Thursday, October 19, 2017, the Empire State Building had green lights in honor of Prospect Park’s 150th Anniversary.
I was born in the mountains of the Mixteca in Puebla, Mexico. I am an Indigenous Zapotec (Zapotecs are an Indigenous group in Central Mexico). I guess this is one of the reasons I love Mother Nature. I came to New York City in 1996. I have lived in Brooklyn for almost 22 years. I have been enjoying Prospect Park for many years. Happy birthday Prospect Park!!!
Unfortunately, Prospect Park (like every other park in New York City) closes at night. I have talked to different people and we all agree that parks should be open day and night. Living in a big city like NYC, people need to go to parks. If Russia, Mexico and other countries can have their parks open 24/7, New York City can also has its parks open 24/7.
According to ProspectPark.org, “Spearheaded by James S.T. Stranahan, a local business and civic leader, and the historic design team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the Park was far from complete on that October day. Unable to keep curious and delighted visitors away from the Park in progress, the designers decided to welcomed the enthusiastic throngs inside for the first time.
The subsequent Monday evening edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle recorded the occasion: “The public were formally invited on Saturday, to visit Prospect Park and see how the work was getting on. The weather being remarkably fine for the season, and inviting out door exercise, the visitors to the Park were numerous…it is safe to estimate the number of visitors yesterday at ten thousand.” By 1868, two million people would enjoy what came to be known as “Brooklyn’s Jewel” and “Brooklyn’s Backyard.” Today, the Park welcomes more than 10 million visitors each year.”

On Friday, July 8th, 2011, it was the commemoration of the 1 year anniversary of the slaughter of the Prospect Park Canada Geese. USDA and NYC Mayors have been killing thousands of geese in New York City for several years. How much of our tax money are they spending in the slaughter of the geese?
