Thursday, April 30, 2020. New York City – For 34th years in a row, GMHC had an AIDS WALK to raise funds for the organization as well as that of several other HIV/ AIDS service organizations that participate in the annual event. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year GMHC cancelled the regular AIDS WALK. They will have a “AIDS WALK Live at Home”.

AIDS Walk New York and GMHC Announce AIDS WALK Live at Home. Annual Walk Reimagined as Virtual Event on June 7 to Raise Life-saving Funds.
This is the press release:
NEW YORK, NY (April 23, 2020)–Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, and New York City’s ban on in-person public gatherings, GMHC and AIDS Walk New York have shifted the physical event into an online fundraising campaign, culminating with a live virtual event commemorating the incredible efforts of fundraisers and the vital work of GMHC. Scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2020, beginning at 10AM, AIDS Walk New York will be a virtual event streamed across numerous online platforms. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the landmark event that funds GMHC’s life-saving services for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
AIDS Walk New York was originally scheduled for May 17 in New York City’s Central Park. The new June 7th virtual event will unite “walkers” from their homes “to be with one another — and to be there for one another”–through a live, interactive webcast, featuring celebrity guests, special performances, and a DJ-led dance party with the AIDS Walk community. Those looking to participate may register as a “walker” or donate at ny.aidswalk.net, to fundraise on behalf of GMHC.
AIDS Walk New York is GMHC’s largest annual fundraising event. Funds raised by the event will support new services implemented during the current global COVID-19 pandemic and help sustain GMHC’s ongoing services throughout the year.
GMHC is grateful for the steadfast support of lead sponsors of AIDS Walk New York, including Presenting Sponsor ViiV Healthcare; Premier Sponsors Delta and Gilead; and Principal Sponsors Barclays, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Fiona and Stan Druckenmiller, the Keith Haring Foundation, Inc., Mesmerize, Pepsico, and Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, GMHC has continued to respond to clients’ needs head on. Since closing its offices in mid-March, GMHC’s staff have been conducting regular wellness calls for more than 1,200 clients. GMHC has also successfully implemented remote service delivery for its mental health, substance use, workforce development, supportive housing, financial management, nutritional counseling, and legal programs, using videoconferencing and other technologies.
Food insecurity is one of the biggest challenges facing GMHC’s clients, many of whom depend on the meals that are regularly served at its Manhattan headquarters. GMHC has tackled this issue by launching a new program called “GMHC On the Go” to deliver thousands of meals to clients at their homes and provide others with the means to buy food at neighborhood supermarkets.
People living with HIV/AIDS are among the most vulnerable populations for COVID-19 infection. Many of GMHC’s clients also suffer from other conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease that put them at higher risk for complications from COVID-19″
