Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafarawi was killed by members of an Israel-linked ‘militia’ in Gaza City, on October 12, 2025.
A senior source in Gaza’s Ministry of Interior told Al Jazeera Arabic that the clashes in Gaza City involved “an armed militia affiliated with the [Israeli] occupation”.
Israel-linked “militia members” killed displaced people as they were returning from southern Gaza to Gaza City, reports Al Jazeera.
GLORY TO THE MARTYR: Saleh Al-Jafarawi
“After two years of covering the atrocities and genocide committed by Israel in Gaza, 27-year-old Palestinian journalist Saleh Al-Jafarawi was targeted and assassinated today by Israel-backed gangs while reporting in Gaza City.
Despite relentless Zionist threats on his life, Al-Jafarawi stayed in the North, reporting for two years so that the world would bear witness to the full extent of Israel’s crimes. Al-Jafarawi’s assassination is a calculated effort by Israel to extinguish the last embers of truth still burning in Gaza, and to inflict collective punishment against Palestinian journalists for choosing to risk their lives and broadcast the genocide to the outside world.
While Saleh’s bravery and dedication to the work was unrivaled, he was also an ordinary person who felt pain, joy, and sorrow no differently than his viewers. A video of Saleh early in the genocide making an infant laugh after a hospital bombing captures how we will remember Saleh: as the humble, good-natured soul that he was, a smile on his face in the harshest of circumstances, and always encouraging those around him, especially children.
Like his colleagues Hossam Shabat and Anas Al-Sharif, Saleh’s wish for his supporters in the event of his martyrdom was for them to keep the struggle alive: “Stay with Gaza, even after the war ends.” As we mourn the immeasurable loss of another one of Palestine’s great journalists, we pledge to honor their memory and their ultimate sacrifice by upholding the principles for which they have their lives: the unyielding pursuit of truth, in service of the Palestinian people’s liberation.”_Palestinian Youth Movement
GLORY TO SALEH AL-JAAFARAWI
“GLORY TO SALEH AL-JAAFARAWI: Around 8:00pm local time today (October 12, 2025), while documenting the destruction of Gaza City following the withdrawal of the occupation forces, 27-year-old Palestinian journalist Saleh al-Jaafarawi was assassinated by an Israeli-backed gang in al-Sabra neighborhood. They shot him seven times.
Saleh, one of the few journalists to survive the genocide, was a beloved voice for his people. He was also at the top of the IOF’s infamous ‘kill list,’ targeting journalists whom they accused of supporting and working with Hamas. On February 15, 2024, Saleh was attacked and injured by the occupation’s drones as he was covering the evacuation of doctors and patients from Al-Nasr Hospital on a designated safe route. Yet he refused to leave Gaza.
“I am Saleh al-Jaafarawi, an independent journalist,” he tweeted in 2023. “I hold the international community responsible for my safety.” Saleh joins over 270 of his colleagues who have been martyred during the genocide, a direct result of Israel’s policy of targeting Palestinian journalists.
Saleh was an accomplished singer, using his voice to comfort the injured and displaced children of Gaza. His smile was infectious. He was also an advocate for the rebuilding of Al-Nasr Children’s Hospital. “We will not stop. We will keep going, with you and alongside you, God willing,” he said in March after his social media accounts, which were crucial to his efforts to rebuild Al-Nasr hospital, were deactivated. “Hand in hand, together, we can be a s_upport system for Gaza’s children and make this campaign a success.” The children of Gaza will miss him.
His assassination is a painful reminder that the Israeli aggression in all its forms has not stopped and will not stop until Zionism is dismantled. “[T]here is no other way towards liberation but resistance. There couldn’t possibly be any other way towards liberation… You must fight. You must get martyred. You must pay a price. There is a tax that we must pay.”
In his last recorded video, Saleh exclaimed: “You need a million years to break the will of these people… and you will not break it.””_Writers Against the War on Gaza
Commemorating the martyrdom of Saleh Al-Jafarawi
“Saleh Al-Jafarawi, A journalist who carried Gaza’s pain in his voice and its strength in his smile. He showed us the truth and steadfastness through his lens.
Saleh wasn’t just behind the camera — he was Gaza.
His laughter, his courage, his humanity — all of it spoke louder than any headline ever could.
We will never forget him and we will continue to honour him.”_PAL-Awda Long Island
