Donald Trump will not commemorate World AIDS Day in 2025.

Monday, December 1, 2025. Lenapehoking (New York City) – World AIDS Day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease and it was designated on December 1 every year since 1988.

“The Trump Administration says it will no longer commemorate World AIDS Day, which is observed around the world on December 1.

According to an email viewed by The New York Times, the State Department last month instructed employees and grantees to “refrain from publicly promoting World AIDS Day through any communication channels, including social media, media engagements, speeches or other public-facing messaging.”

This directive means 2025 will be the first first time since 1988 that the U.S. government has failed to mark World AIDS Day. Earlier this year, the Trump administration froze foreign funding for many public health programs dedicated to fighting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS,” reported Democracy Now! on December 1, 2025.

Today is World AIDS Day / Day With(out) Art

Visual AIDS fosters culture that understands HIV as part of human experience, because we all live in a world shaped by HIV and AIDS. More than 40 million people are living with HIV today, and 44 million more have been lost to the pandemic.

On World AIDS Day, we are centering the voices of people who use drugs. Shame and stigma have created a culture of silence that removes possibilities from people’s lives and reinforces a single narrative about drug use and HIV.

Today we are releasing Meet Us Where We’re At, six new videos that break the silence around HIV and drug use. When we forefront the voices of people who use drugs in culture, we uncover new visions of how drugs can exist inside of a person’s life. These honest conversations about drugs deepen our understanding of risk and illuminate what possibilities exist for pleasure, relationships, care, and creativity.

Meet Us Where We’re At is available to stream online, and is screening at more than 100 museums, universities, and non-profit spaces around the world starting today,” said Visual AIDS on December 1, 2025.

World AIDS Day in NYC

“On this World AIDS day, it’s time to Act Up, fight facism, and stop cuts to healthcare, housing, and food!

Check out pictures from today’s rally and march denouncing the Trump Administration’s deadly budget cuts, and authoritarian attacks on free speech, assembly and protest – bedrocks of our country that were used by AIDS activists in the 80s and 90s to save millions of lives at home and abroad.

We’re proud to stand with our partners – @housingworks, @callenlorde, @actupny, @harlemunitednyc, @popdemoc, and @nycaidsmemorial,” said VOCAL-NY on December 1, 2025.

World AIDS Day 2025 — Message from Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS.

“Over 60% of all women-led HIV organizations have lost funding or been forced to suspend work. Other HIV prevention services have been hit hard too. The number of people using PrEP—HIV prevention medicines—has fallen by 64% in Burundi, 31% in Uganda and 21% in Viet Nam.

All this comes amid a regression in human rights. The number of countries criminalising same-sex relationships has increased this year with Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali and Trinidad and Tobago introducing criminalization. And this amidst a broader wave of new regressive legislation.” Read more on www.unaids.org.

Organizers say on their website www.NYCPride.org, “The first March was held in 1970 and has since become an annual civil rights demonstration. Over the years, its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to illness, violence and neglect.” Photo by Javier Soriano/www.JavierSoriano.com
