People gathered near the corner of 72nd St and 5th Ave in Bay Ridge. After the rally, peaceful pro-Palestine, anti-genocide New Yorkers wanted to march in the street, but New York City Police Department (NYPD) agents didn’t want protestors to march in the street.
NYPD officers closed many streets because they didn’t want New Yorkers commemorating the 78th anniversary of the Nakba (“catastrophe”) Day to march in those streets.
“Your NYPD has spent the last two weeks defending sales of stolen Palestinian land. Today your NYPD repeatedly blocked protestors marching in the heart of New York’s Palestinian community in Bay Ridge for Nakba Day. Your words are useless without action,” said Palawda NY/NJ to New York City mayor, Zohran Kwame Mamdani, after the protest, on May 16, 2026.
