“Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached enslaved people in Texas, 2 years after it had been declared in 1863. But our freedom wasn’t granted by a president writing a document—it was fought for through the organized struggle of Black people.

We’re still fighting for our liberation, as the capitalist system robs us of our ability to earn a living wage, to afford dignified housing, healthcare, education, and food, while Black communities are still being terrorized by racist police violence.

Tomorrow, we’re honoring the history of struggle here in the Bronx, while committing to continue fighting for our liberation. Join us for a day of speeches, music, performances, food, and activities for children,” said Andre Easton on Friday, June 19, 2026.

Happy Juneteenth 2026. Happy Freedom Day!

Juneteenth (a blend of “June” and “Nineteenth”) is a federal holiday in the United States of America commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It marks the day on June 19, 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were free.

Although former US President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, it took more than two and a half years for the news and enforcement to reach the westernmost Confederate state of Texas.

On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, and read General Orders No. 3, which stated: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” This brought freedom to more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state.

Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, or Emancipation Day.

At least 12 U.S. presidents held Black people in slavery throughout their lives, and at least 8 of those presidents had enslaved Black people while in the White House.

White supremacist presidents who held Black people in slavery: George Washington (1st President), Thomas Jefferson (3rd President), James Madison (4th President), James Monroe (5th President), Andrew Jackson (7th President; one of the founders of the imperialist, zionist, corrupt, interventionist, terrorist, genocidal, fascist Democratic Party; signed the “Indian Removal Act,” which was used to steal Native American lands and commit genocide and ethnic cleansing against Native American people), Martin Van Buren (8th President; the other founder of the Democratic Party; stole Native American lands and committed genocide and ethnic cleansing against Native Americans), William Henry Harrison (9th President), John Tyler (10th President), James Knox Polk (11th President; member of the Democratic Party; invaded Mexico from 1846 to 1848, and as a result of that invasion, the USA stole more than half of Mexican territory), Zachary Taylor (12th President), Andrew Johnson (17th President), Ulysses S. Grant (18th President).
