The third pretrial hearing for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, 63, and First Combatant Cilia Flores, 69, took place at the U.S. District Court in Manhattan before Judge Alvin Hellerstein. During the hearing, both prosecutors and defense counsel proposed setting the trial start date for June 1, 2027. The judge will finalize the exact date.
Both parties, prosecutors and defense counsel, agreed to submit pretrial motions (including efforts to dismiss the case based on head-of-state immunity and the legality of the capture) due by early September 2026.
President Maduro wore a beige prison uniform and glasses; he greeted the court upon entry while his wife, First Lady of Venezuela, Cilia Flores, sat nearby in matching attire.
President Nicolás Maduro and First Combatant Cilia Flores pleaded not guilty and have been held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn since they were kidnapped in Caracas, on January 3, 2026.
President Maduro has called himself a prisoner of war and his capture a kidnapping.
On January 5, 2026, he said in Spanish at his arraignment, “I am not guilty. I am a decent man, the constitutional president of my country.”

“On Wednesday, July 22 at 8am, we will be outside the courthouse at Baxter St and Worth St demanding the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Combatant Cilia Flores, who were kidnapped in a U.S. terrorist attack against Venezuela on January 3rd.
The kidnapping of a sitting president made it clear: Venezuela’s sovereignty is under attack. Now the U.S. and the zionist entity are extending their claws deeper into the country, using earthquake relief as a Trojan horse for occupation and plunder.
We demand the U.S. and the zionist entity out of Venezuela, out of Cuba, and out of all of Latin America.
Free Maduro! Free Cilia! Hands off Venezuela! No war on Cuba!” said Workers World Party on July 7, 2026.
