Puerto Ricans and their allies gathered in front of Lincoln Hospital (E 149th St. and Morris Ave). Protestors marched on E. 149th Street to St. Mary’s Park, where they ended the protest.

People spoke outside Lincoln Hospital and in St. Mary’s Park in support of the Puerto Rican independence and against La Junta and Esencia.

On August 16, 2026, André Fabian Cervantes shared photos on Instagram and said, “08/16/2026 La Marcha por la Independencia rally in the South Bronx.

The people of the Bronx take care of their own and we fight and speak up for those who can’t. When the current U.S government and Puerto Rican government force the development of Proyecto Esencia y La Junta on those who do not wish it, they will get nothing but resistance and revolution.

Colonization, exploitation and destruction of local environments and a drain on precious resources like electricity and water will not be tolerated under any government against the people. Puerto Rico is not for sale! El pueblo está en la calle y viene la revolución!”

On August 16, 2026, The New York City branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation shared a video on Facebook and said, “New Yorkers alongside the Puerto Rican diaspora march through the South Bronx demanding independence for Puerto Rico and an end to the control of the Fiscal Oversight Board.

The Fiscal Oversight Board, known as La Junta, has controlled all budgetary decisions in Puerto Rico for 10 years. Members of La Junta are unelected, appointed by the president, and are not accountable to the needs of Puerto Ricans. Recently, their budget cuts have attacked education—they’ve slashed the University of Puerto Rico’s budget in half, and caused the closures of one third of Puerto Rico’s public schools.

While funding is cut from education and municipal budgets, the $2.5 billion development project, Proyecto Esencia, is allowed to continue in Cabo Rojo. It’s clear that the U.S. & Puerto Rican governments are only concerned with diverting resources away from Puerto Ricans and into the hands of wealthy land developers.

Puerto Rico has been held as a U.S. colony for 128 years too long. It’s time for Puerto Ricans to have the power to make decisions that prioritize their lives and needs. ¡Que viva Puerto Rico libre!”

We marched and spoke out today in Bronx for Puerto Rico independence, linking fight against colonial oppression there to fight against police terror, displacement, etc. here, overseen by Dems for Wall Street masters. Workers Should Run Borikén! Cancel the debt! Fuera La Junta!”

On August 16, 2026, The New York City branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation shared another video on Instagram and said, “Today, the PSL was proud to march alongside organizations and members of the Puerto Rican diaspora to demand an end to La Junta and independence for Puerto Rico.

For the past 10 years, the Fiscal Oversight Board known as La Junta has controlled Puerto Rico’s budget. This unelected board has made budget cuts attacking education, healthcare, and pensions, while allowing billion-dollar development projects like Esencia to eat up land, water, and energy resources, & receive nearly $500 million in tax credits.

In the Bronx, home to the largest community of Puerto Ricans in NYC, this reality feels familiar. People struggle to access healthcare, affordable housing, groceries, and the basic necessities we need to live dignified lives. From the Bronx to Puerto Rico, our struggle is one!”

On August 10, 2026, Diaspora Pa’lante Collective NYC.NJ said, “Join us THIS SUNDAY, August 16th at 1pm in the South Bronx as we march for the independence of our nation. Bring your people, your voice, your flags, and your signs – we have a limited number to hand out! Meet us at Lincoln Hospital (E 149th St. and Morris Ave).

Our archipelago is in a state of emergency, and NOW is the time to act! While the government continues to sell Puerto Rico off to the highest bidder, Boricuas are facing water, energy, and cost of living crises.
