Walmart workers are going on strike on Black Friday.

Thursday, November 22, 2012. New York City – Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, November 23, 2012.

On the three-day Black Friday weekend, shoppers spent $52.4 billion last year, 16% more than Black Friday 2010, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF).

This year, for the first time in history, Walmart workers are going on strike. If you want to stand with Walmart Strikers on Black Friday, go to ForRespect.org.

11/22/11 Brooklyn, NYC. 9pm - Hundreds of people waiting in line to spend some money.

They say, “Across the country, Walmart employs 1.4 million people. We are not just the Associates that you see in stores, we are moms and dads, sons and daughters, husbands and wives working hard to support our families. We have been speaking out for good jobs with decent pay, regular hours, affordable healthcare and respect, but instead of working with us to make changes, Walmart has attempted to silence and retaliate against us for speaking out. Our jobs have been threatened, our hours cut, our schedules changed. Some of us have even been fired. We will not be silenced. Throughout the holiday season, including Black Friday, we will be standing up for an end to the retaliation against workers who speak out for what’s right for our families, our communities and our country, and we hope that you will stand with us.

It is not an easy decision, but without an end to the retaliation, Walmart workers across the country will be walking off the job in protest, and we hope you will join us in creative, non-violent action in solidarity with our strike. We ask that supporters take action that spreads the word about our strikes and demonstrates to Walmart a wave of support for workers who are speaking out.”

Wall Street to Walmart: Occupy Black Friday.
In solidarity with 99 pickets, we are calling for solidarity actions across the United States for the Black Friday Walmart Strike:
In the wake of a series of unprecedented Walmart retail and warehouse strikes, Walmart workers, labor allies and community supporters have put Walmart on notice for Black Friday: End retaliation and attempts to silence workers or face nationwide strikes and direct action.

Walmart Strikers Food Fund
Occupy Wall Street is committed to supporting the Walmart worker strikes that will commence on Black Friday (11/23/2012). We are raising money to provide food and sundries to Walmart workers who will lose needed wages as they strike so that they can achieve better work conditions. We ask you to participate by donating, at the very least, what you make in one hour, to provide food and basic items to striking workers.

We are working with the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart) and the Walmart workers to distribute this money to striking workers who are who speaking out for good jobs and stronger communities.

We support all of the Walmart workers who are refusing to work on Black Friday in protest of Walmart’s attempts to illegally silence and retaliate against them. We are committed to engaging our communities and urging them to take action to support Walmart workers this holiday season.
