Tuesday, October 27, 2015. New York City – This fall (from Monday, October 5, 2015 to Friday, October 9, 2015), was the fifth and final week-long visit in a three-year residency of bell hooks at The New School. It featured conversations with leading public intellectuals and scholars.

It was an honor to be there every day and take pictures of bell hooks. I also took pictures of bell hooks residency at The New School in 2014.

“For more than three decades, bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins) has been recognized internationally as a scholar, poet, author, and radical thinker. The dozens of books and articles she has published span several genres, including cultural and political analyses and critiques, personal memoirs, poetry collections, and children’s books. Her writings cover topics of gender, race, class, spirituality, teaching, and the significance of media in contemporary culture. According to Dr. hooks, these topics must be understood as interconnected in the production of systems of oppression and class domination.

When Dr. hooks published her first book, And There We Wept, in 1978, she released it under the name “bell hooks” for two reasons. The first was to honor her maternal grandmother, Bell Blair Hooks, whom she has described as being “known for her snappy and bold tongue.” Second, and more broadly, the name, expressed in lowercase letters, de-emphasizes the author as person and instead focuses attention on the subject of her writing.”_The New School

Theaster Gates is a Chicago-based installation artist and recipient of the inaugural Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics at The New School. He was the first recipient of The New School’s Vera List Center for Art and Politics Prize in 2013, and was honored through a conference, exhibition and faculty research trip, under the heading of “Theaster Gates. A Way of Working.” The related book, Entry Points, will be available in 4 weeks, through Duke University Press.

Laurie Anderson: Performance artist, composer and musician.

Marci Blackman is an author, her first novel, Po Man’s Child, received the American Library Association’s Stonewall Award for Best Fiction and the Firecracker Alternative Book Award for Best New Fiction. Her second novel, Tradition was noted as one of Band of Thebes best books of 2013.

Darnell L. Moore is a Senior Editor at MicNews and Co-Managing/Editor at The Feminist Wire. Along with NFL player Wade Davis II, he co-founded YOU Belong, a social good company focused on the development of diversity initiatives.
