Comandante Fidel Castro traveled to New York City five times as the President of Cuba, in addition to two earlier visits as a young anti-Batista.

Former President of Cuba Fidel Castro was a staunch and vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, aligning Cuba with the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), severing diplomatic ties with Israel in 1973, and consistently condemning Israeli government policies and military actions as imperialist occupation.

Comandante Fidel Castro officially severed diplomatic relations with Israel in September 1973 during a Non-Aligned Movement summit.

Cuba historically provided and continues to reserve university scholarships for hundreds of Palestinian students to study medicine and other professions.

Fidel Castro fiercely opposed the policies, territorial expansion, and military actions of the Israeli government, viewing them as being backed by U.S. imperialism.

Official Visits as President of Cuba.

As head of state, his major trips to New York City (primarily for United Nations General Assembly sessions) occurred in:

April 1959: His famous post-victory tour where he met with Vice President Richard Nixon and visited the Bronx Zoo.

September 1960: The historic visit where he famously stayed at the Hotel Theresa in Harlem and met Malcolm X.

October 1979: A trip to address the United Nations.

October 1995: A visit for the UN’s 50th anniversary.

September 2000: His final visit for the UN Millennium Summit, which included a major speech at Riverside Church in Harlem.

Pre-Revolution Visits.

1948 and 1955: Fidel Castro visited New York as a student and political exile/fundraiser before leading the Cuban Revolution.
