The NYPD has set up 13 controlled entry checkpoints with magnetometers. Open at 2:00 a.m. on Monday.
The NYPD bans the following items: Weapons, alcohol, coolers, backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, blankets, chairs, bicycles, scooters and skateboards, etc.
Brooklyn’s traditional early-morning J’Ouvert (meaning “daybreak”) celebration takes place on Monday, September 7, 2026, starting in the pre-dawn hours ahead of the 59th New York Carnival Parade. There will be steel pan bands, traditional rhythm sections, and revelers dancing in the streets before dawn to mark the start of carnival day.
It is an area militarized by the New York City Police Department (NYPD). Attendees must enter through designated NYPD checkpoints to access the pre-dawn route. NYPD officers use handheld metal-detector wands and conduct bag inspections at all entry gates. The NYPD deploys a heavy officer presence alongside light towers, fixed/temporary cameras, and drone surveillance teams to monitor the area.
J’Ouvert street closures will begin at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday and remain in effect until 11 a.m. on Monday.
Flatbush Avenue will be closed from Grand Army Plaza to Empire Boulevard; Empire Boulevard will be closed from Flatbush Avenue to Nostrand Avenue; and Nostrand Avenue will be closed from Empire Boulevard to Rutland Road.
59th New York Carnival Parade

This year’s parade begins at 11 a.m. Monday and will end at 5:30 p.m., a half-hour earlier than in previous years. New York City mayor, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Zohran Kwame Mamdani and the NYPD commissioner, zionist Jessica Tisch donot want Caribbean people to celebrate their culture?
The 59th New York Carnival Parade (before known as Annual West Indian American Day Carnival Parade, Labor Day Caribbean Parade) will take place on Monday, September 7, 2026. The massive celebration runs along Eastern Parkway from Utica Avenue to Grand Army Plaza in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. There will be floats playing high-energy soca, reggae, and dancehall alongside thousands of participants in feather-covered masquerade costumes. Food vendors will sell Caribbean-style food options—including jerk chicken, curry, and traditional Caribbean patties—lining the parade route.
Cecille Ford, from the West Indian American Day Carnival Association said, “This year’s theme is MAS – music, action, soul, which represents our culture and all that we bring from the Caribbean here as immigrants.”

Street closures for the parade will roll out at 6 a.m. Monday, and closures expand around 10:30 a.m., with Eastern Parkway set to shut down from Utica Avenue to Grand Army Plaza.

Sunday, June 14, 2020. Brooklyn, New York City – Caribbean Americans gathered on Flatbush Ave and Church Ave in Flatbush and marched to Grand Army Plaza for a rally. Protestors demanded justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the many other people killed by police officers in the United States of America. They also demanded that Council members and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio cut the NYPD budget by at least one billion. Allies of the Caribbean community joined the march and rally.
