Saturday, June 6, 2020. New York City – I covered a rally/march from Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn to Washington Square Park in Manhattan. And another march from Washington Square Park to Foley Square Park.
Is it possible to defund the police? The government has been defunding schools and hospitals. Yes, it is possible to defund the NYPD.
Sam Levin wrote the article “What does ‘defund the police’ mean? The rallying cry sweeping the US – explained” on The Guardian. This is part of the article, “For years, community groups have advocated for defunding law enforcement – taking money away from police and prisons – and reinvesting those funds in services. The basic principle is that government budgets and “public safety” spending should prioritize housing, employment, community health, education and other vital programs, instead of police officers. Advocates argue that defunding is the best way forward since attempts to reform police practices over the last five years have failed, as evidenced by the brutal killing of George Floyd. Groups have a range of demands, with some seeking modest reductions and others viewing full defunding as a step toward abolishing contemporary police services.”
There will be more rallies and marches tomorrow, Sunday, June 7, 2020.

CPR Action Fund said on Twitter, “We demand that the governor, mayor, and city council pass a budget that puts children first during this crucial time. That means drastic increases to public school and social service budgets, and sharp cuts to the NYPD’s budget. #NYCBudgetJustice”
Another Twit by CPR Action Fund says, “As @AOC says, invest in quality housing and education, not $6 BILLION to criminalize New Yorkers. #NYCBudgetJustice #DefundNYPD”
“After a video surfaced of George Floyd being murdered by Minneapolis police, 15-year-old Kellen started a petition demanding justice. It’s now the biggest petition ever on Change.org and officers have been arrested and charged. But we haven’t yet seen justice.”_Change.org

Bernie Sanders said on Twitter today, “We are seeing all over this country people fighting for justice. Let’s continue that struggle. Let’s create the kind of nation we know we can become.”
On Friday, June 5, 2020, Bernie Sanders said on Twitter, “I’m very proud of the people standing up for justice and taking to the streets. When we study history we look at pivotal moments — the Civil War, the Great Depression, World War II. People will look back on this time as one of those moments.”
On Saturday, June 6, 2020, Dr. Jill Stein said on Twitter, “Police militarization is an endless, deadly arms race that endangers people of color & the poor, & impoverishes our communities. Tweaks around the margins (body cams, bias training, duty to report etc.) haven’t worked. This needs a total system change.”
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio lifted the curfew on the morning of Sunday, June 7, 2020.
The NYCLU said on Twitter, “NYC’s curfew is lifted, effective immediately.
This would not have happened without immense pressure from New Yorkers protesting + the threat of a lawsuit.
We are ready w/ @theCCR @LegalAidNYC @HU_TMCRC to take legal action if Mayor de Blasio considers the curfew again.”
