Protesters wanted NYC Mayor, Bill de Blasio and NYC Council members to defund the NYPD for at least $1 billion.

Alex Williamson wrote on bkreader.com, “What exactly does “defunding the police” mean in New York City? It does not necessarily mean disbanding the entire police department (although that’s exactly what the city of Minneapolis has agreed to do after one of its officers killed George Floyd).

Instead, defunding the NYPD will most likely mean making significant cuts to the department’s budget and redirecting those funds to social programs, which may have the added benefit of improving quality of life and reducing poverty, and in turn, crime.

With a budget of more than $11 billion, when counting fringe expenses such as pensions, precincts, and legal settlements, the NYPD’s budget is about ten times that of the nation’s second most expensive police department, the LAPD, which costs the city of Los Angeles roughly $1.73 billion annually.”

On Tuesday, June 30, New York City Council Members approved a spending plan that DID NOT reduce the NYPD’s budget by a billion dollars.

Council Members that voted YES, did not want to defund the NYPD by at least $1 billion. Council Members that voted NO, agreed with protesters and wanted to defund the NYPD by at least $1 billion.

Mark Treyger voted YES. In other words, Mark sided with the NYPD again. Mark does not support Black Lives Matter, he supports the police.

This is the list of Council Members and how they voted on Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

Friday, June 12, 2020. New York City – There were so many protests in “The City that Never Sleeps” today that I did not know where to go.

The rally and march I covered today was in Coney Island. People gathered in Asser Levy Park and marched on the Coney Island boardwalk, Mermaid Ave, Surf Ave and went back to Asser Levy Park.

Organizers said this was a “peaceful demonstration for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the many other victims of police brutality. We march on the Coney Island boardwalk in celebration of their lives and heed the call for action to change policing in our nation.”

Who organized this event? Was this event organized by the NYPD? The NYPD told people were to march. One of the speakers was a NYPD Sargent (someone on Instagram said organizers gave the Sargent a medal).

Organizers invited Council member Mark Treyger. Mark was against the chokehold bill and Right to Know Act.

Politico says, “Mark Treyger of Brooklyn told Capital he is not supportive of the chokehold or Right to Know Act legislation because he takes seriously the reservations expressed by Bratton (Bill Bratton was the NYPD Commisioner).

Mark is not a friend of the Black community or Latino community, he is a friend of the NYPD.

Mark was a strong supporter of corrupt Democrat Assemblywoman Pamela Harris.

Another politician that was invited was Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus. Frontus represents the 46th State Assembly District that includes Bath Beach, Bay Ridge, Brighton Beach, Coney Island, and Dyker Heights. The seat was vacated by corrupt Democrat Assemblywoman Pamela Harris.

CPR Change the NYPD said on Twitter today, “We’re glad to hear some @NYCCouncil leaders have heard our call for #NYCBudgetJustice & are proposing $1B in cuts. But New Yorkers, now is not time to let up, must keep pushing for *AT LEAST* $1B in cuts A REALITY & to REDEFINE public safety in our city.”

What NYC Council members support defunding the NYPD for at least $1B? A new poll says most Black people want to defund the police and give the money to social programs. A politician can not say he or she supports Black Lives Matter but at the same time she/he is against defunding the police.

There will be more protests on Saturday, June 13, 2020.

Dr. Jill Stein said on Twitter today, “Militarized police terrorize people of color, endanger communities, drain local budgets. The US military terrorizes people of color, endangers communities around the world, devours over 1/2 discretionary fed budget. It’s not enough to #DefundThePolice. We must #DefundTheMilitary.”

Today Bernie Sanders said on Twitter, “Instead of spending $740 billion on the Dept. of Defense, let’s rebuild communities at home devastated by poverty and incarceration. I’ll be filing an amendment to cut the DoD by 10% and reinvest that money in cities and towns that we’ve neglected and abandoned for far too long.”

Bernie Sanders also said today, “State and district attorneys and prosecutors are on the front lines of the struggle against a racist criminal justice system. If we’re going to create change, we must commit to electing progressive DA candidates who will fight for justice.”

Why most NYPD officers do not wear a mask? If officers have COVID-19 and they touch, shove, arrest someone, that person could get coronavirus from NYPD officers. New York governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio say they want officers to wear a mask, but most officers do not wear a mask. The Mayor is suppose to to in charge of the police department but I guess the NYPD controls the Mayor. The Twitter account, @nypdmaskwatch is sharing pictures of NYPD officers without masks, with their names, badge numbers and location.

Community Resource Hub for Safety & Accountability said on Twitter, “Seeing many police without masks/PPE & attacking protesters in ways that actively put folks at greater risk. The COVID19 Policing Project is monitoring police-related exposure in addition to enforcement of orders. On Thursday, June 11, 2020, the person running the Instagram account JusticeForGeorgeNYC said, “One of my favorite parts about running this account over the last two weeks has been watching so many of you find your place as a leader in this movement, most of you unexpectedly.

Some of you have had experience organizing but never commanded crowds so large, while others were newbies just eager to bring the conversation to their own neighborhoods. Some found themselves leading a chant for the first time, while others, for the first time, chanted back. Some of you were speakers sharing your truths in front of strangers, while others sat and taught us how to listen. Sometimes you were in the middle of the dance circle, and sometimes you were on the sidelines handing out food, water, masks, and first aid. All of you experimenting with little to no precedent. All of you different races and ages.

It has been my greatest honor to watch you all grow as leaders in your own right. To hear how it has changed you. To share with you in that pride, vulnerability, and personal strength as you inspire everyone watching to hope and to dream and to fight so that maybe this time it will be different. Hold onto that and don’t ever forget how much you are all needed here. Now and later.

Some people are referring to this as a “leaderless movement.” But I don’t see a leaderless anything, do you? ? @kizh_ner
