Defund The NYPD. Police-free schools (PHOTOS/VIDEO).
Thursday, June 18, 2020. New York City – Today I covered the “PEP rally for Police-Free Schools” in Brooklyn. Students, teachers, and parents called on Richard A. Carranza, the New York City Schools Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education and the Panel for Educational policy (PEP) for Police-Free Schools.
Protestors demand police-free schools and funding for restorative justice programs and counselors.
Teachers Unite said on Facebook before the rally, “Thursday evening, June 18th, leading up to the scheduled Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) contract approval meeting, students, educators, and family members will rally in Central Brooklyn to demand New York City divest from the NYPD and invest in schools and communities. This comes after over 1,000 students, educators, and family members marched in Lower Manhattan on June 6th to demand police-free schools.
In the past week, organizers across the country have rallied behind the collective demand for police-free schools, with recent victories in the Denver, Charlottesville, and Portland school systems. It is districts with elected school boards that are currently driving the wave of change.”
Teachers Unite said on Instagram, “As we talk about #DefundNYPD, we’re asked how we’d keep schools safe. Teachers Unite has been working on this for YEARS. Watch our video to learn what TU members say Restorative Justice really means.”
There will many events to celebrate Juneteenth on Friday, June 19, 2020. The Instagram account JusticeForGeorgeNYC has a list of events in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. Click the link for info:https://www.instagram.com/justiceforgeorgenyc/
Teachers Unite say they will have a Children’s March for Black Lives Matter next Saturday, June 20, 2020. Elementary and middle school students will be marching for Police Free Schools and to Fund the New York City Department of Education (DOE) not NYPD. 10:00 A.M. meet up at 95th/6th Ave in Manhattan and march to Gracie Mansion.
VOCAL-NY will have the rally “Occupy NYC City Hall to #DefundNYPD Protest!” on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 5PM at City Hall in Manhattan. VOCAL-NY says, “The call for defunding the police and reinvesting in community needs is taking hold across the country and in New York. Last week the New York City Council proposed a $1 billion divestment from the NYPD. Mayor de Blasio has acknowledged the need to decrease the NYPD’s $6 billion budget, but quickly shot down the Council’s proposal.
Join us in-person at NYC City Hall or online for a protest to defund the NYPD and invest in communities – one week before the city budget is finalized on Tuesday, June 30th. Please bring masks and a commitment to personal steps to reduce the spread of COVID-19. We will provide masks for those who need them.”
