New Yorkers celebrate Juneteenth 2020 (PHOTOS/VIDEO).

Friday, June 19, 2020. New York City – Today I covered different events about Juneteenth. Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day) is celebrated annually on June 19 in the United States of America to commemorate Union army general Gordon Granger’s reading of federal orders in the city of Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, proclaiming all slaves in Texas were now free.

Protestors demanded justice for Black people killed by police officers in the country. Protestors also want NYC Council members and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio to defund the NYPD by at least one billion and invest in social programs.

Some protestors had a rally at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn and marched from Grand Army Plaza to Manhattan. They crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. Other protestors had music. Protestors in Prospect Park had a vigil for women killed by police officers and civilians.

Bernie Sanders said today on Twitter, “It is time that we, as a nation, come to terms with slavery’s horrors and how they affect every aspect of our lives today. I am proud to celebrate #Juneteenth with Mr. Danny Glover.”

“This is a moment where we need some political mountains to move. We need some structural mountains to move. We need the mountain of racism to move, the mountain of bigotry and hate to move.” –@Booker4KY

“Our foreign policy is focused on diplomacy… a global Green New Deal, understanding foreign policy through the lens of climate change, coming together with our allies to end the forever wars, create living wage jobs all over the world.” –@JamaalBowmanNY

There will be protests about police brutality, racial justice, defund the NYPD, etc. tomorrow, Saturday, June 20, 2020.

“Although the Emancipation Proclamation had formally freed them (the slaves) almost two and a half years earlier, and the American Civil War had largely ended with the defeat of the Confederate States in April, Texas was the most remote of the slave states, with a low presence of Union troops, so enforcement of the proclamation had been slow and inconsistent.

A common misconception is that this day marks the end of slavery in the United States, although this day marks the emancipation of all slaves in the Confederacy, the institution of slavery was still legal and existed in the Union border states after June 19, 1865. Slavery in the United States did not officially end until the ratification of the 13th amendment to the Constitution of the United States on December 6, 1865, which had abolished slavery entirely in all of the U.S. states and territories.

Celebrations date to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. It spread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering on a food festival. During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, it was eclipsed by the struggle for postwar civil rights, but grew in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African American freedom and arts. By the 21st century, Juneteenth was celebrated in most major cities across the United States. Activists are campaigning for the United States Congress to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday.”_Wikipedia.org
