Wednesday, June 24, 2020. New York City – Today I covered the rally “Elders For Black Lives” in City Hall Park in Manhattan, New York City. “Elders For Black Lives” demand that NYC Council members and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio cut at least $1 Billion from the NYPD budget.
Jews for Racial & Economic Justice said they “demand that our city’s budget funds peaceful aging instead of the forces that curtail life. We call on our city’s leaders to cut $1 billion from the NYPD, and invest in Black lives, in elder care, in education, housing, jobs, healthcare, and social services.
NYC needs to devote its financial resources to the actual lives of its residents, instead of punishment and incarceration.
As people who have seen generations of injustice, #EldersForBlackLives are determined to not let one more year pass in the same bloody way as the last. Let us grow old with dignity, and let all the next generations thrive.”
Inca Mohamed was one of the speakers. She said, “We need to start putting money in things that can really make us safe! I haven’t seen something like this in 50 years. And I don’t have another 50 years! If not now, when? That’s why I had to come out here.”
Leslie Cagan was one of the speakers. She spoke about her vulnerability as an elder, and the safety and privilege her whiteness gives her: “My life is precious, I want to live for a long time. But my life is no more precious than anyone else’s life!”
