Friday, July 17, 2020. Brooklyn, New York City – On Thursday, July 16, 2020, I covered a demonstration to demand justice for Mexican José Antonio Barrera.
On Saturday, July 11, 2020, José Antonio Barrera was hit by driver Kareem Denton in Brooklyn, New York City. José Antonio was unloading groceries in front of his home. José was killed in front of his 6 years old daughter.
Kareem, who is Black, was arrested by the NYPD, but he was released without charges.
Araceli Sanchez, José’s widow demands justice for her husband and her family. Araceli and José have four children.

Mexicans and other Latinos and Latinas came to the rally in front of Araceli’s house. Academia De Mariachi Nuevo Amanecer from Queens sang several songs. NYC_SafeStreets and Transportation Alternatives helped organized the demonstration.
Elected officials that attended the rally were: Eric Leroy Adams, Borough President of Brooklyn, New York State Senator, Andrew Gounardes, New York State Assemblymember, Robert Carroll, NYC Council Member, Brad Lander. Kashif Hussain came to represent Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams, Ron Snyder came to represent Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.
After the rally people marched to the 66th precinct to demand justice for this family.
