Indigenous women, men and their allies gathered at the Merchants’ Gate (59th Street and 8 Avenue/Central Park West) to remember our Indigenous ancestors.

The Indigenous Day of Remembrance is an annual event that remembers and honors our Indigenous ancestors whom suffered or were murdered by the invaders in 1492 and many years after 1492.

Organizers say on the Facebook group NYC Indigenous Day of Remembrance: “The NYC Indigenous Day of Remembrance is an Inter-tribal Annual Event at Columbus Circle to honor our First Nations/Indigenous Ancestors. We will never forget the genocide inflicted on our ancestors beginning in 1492. We Are Still Here to honor and celebrate Indigenous culture.”

Some people in the Americas celebrate Día de la Raza. Día de la Raza celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492.

Día de la Raza and Columbus Day celebrate the same: Christopher Columbus.

Instead of celebrating Día de la Raza o Columbus Day, we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

More and more cities and states in the United States of America are honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day.

This year, the event was in memory of Dee Doval and Connie Laboy-Torres.

“Dee Doval is an ancestor now. Forever will she protect our Indigenous Day of Remembrance circle. She was there from the beginning and will be missed in the flesh but always will be with us in Spirit.”_Luis Ramos.
