Wednesday, December 2, 2020. New York City – Former president of the United States of America, Barack Obama told Peter Hamby, who hosts a Snapchat political show “Good Luck America,” that those who use the slogan “Defund The Police” could jeopardize their goals of enacting meaningful reforms for police. Obama has a HARVARD degree so he must know what Defund The Police means.
I have been covering Black Lives Matter demonstrations in New York City for many years. Activists want to Defund The Police and REINVEST the money in our communities. It’s not a “snappy” slogan.
On Thursday, November 5, 2020, I covered the rally and march, “WE CHOOSE FREEDOM.” Organizers said on Instagram before the demonstration, “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will not give me Freedom. No politician can help us win because there are no good politicians in a racist system.”
There were hundreds of NYPD police officers. NYPD officers arrested Trans rights activist Joel Rivera for not reason. Joel Rivera has been leading rallies and marches for Black trans liberation in Manhattan, New York City, every Thursday for many consecutive weeks.
In the weekly WNYC’s Brian Lehrer show, Ask The Mayor segment on Friday morning, a caller asked Mayor Bill de Blasio why these small protests require hundreds, if not thousands of NYPD officers, helicopters, and untold amounts of taxpayer resources.

People use Twitter to share their opinions.
Saeed Jones: “Anyone who would walk away from a conversation about police brutality “because of a slogan” was never all that invested in real change. We know this. Obama does too. Just as he knows, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Rekia Boyd died while he was President.”
Rashida Tlaib: “Rosa Parks was vilified & attacked for her civil disobedience. She was targeted. It’s hard seeing the same people who uplift her courage, attack the movement for Black lives that want us to prioritize health, funding of schools & ending poverty, rather than racist police systems.”
Cori Bush: “With all due respect, Mr. President—let’s talk about losing people. We lost Michael Brown Jr. We lost Breonna Taylor. We’re losing our loved ones to police violence. It’s not a slogan. It’s a mandate for keeping our people alive. Defund the police.”
Jabari Brisport: “Democrats now have a supermajority in both the NY state assembly and state senate, along with the most left-leaning body in NY’s history. Defund the police.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: “What if activists aren’t PR firms for politicians & their demands are bc police budgets are exploding, community resources are shrinking to bankroll it, & ppl brought this up for ages but it wasn’t until they said “defund” that comfortable people started paying attn to brutality.”
Ilhan Omar: “We lose people in the hands of police. It’s not a slogan but a policy demand. And centering the demand for equitable investments and budgets for communities across the country gets us progress and safety.”
Charles Booker: “We didn’t lose Breonna because of a slogan. Instead of conceding this narrative, let’s shape our own. It’s time we listen to the people, organize and build coalitions around our own message, and cast a vision that inspires us all to lead for change at the ballot box and beyond.”
Doctors For Defunding Police: “We do not need more police officers. We created a fake drug war and criminalized mental health & poverty which fed the bloated billion dollar police budget. We need upstream investment in communities and to radically change our approach #DefundThePolice.”
Compton Jay: “To President Obama,
You have shown yourself to be a tool to keep the white supremacy structure in place. You and Jim Clyburn are no allies to the black community.
#DefundThePolice”
Priscilla González: “#Defundthepolice is that powerful of a grassroots demand and strategy that pundits and electeds keep trying to undermine it by quibbling about semantics. Just be direct and tell us you oppose anything that challenges the outsized power of police.”
RailroadedUnderground: “We have always known the solution to crime in America: Better Schools, Economic Opportunity, & Housing just to name a few. The fact that #DefundThePolice is scandalous & nationwide we rather invest in prisons than schools is why we have a crime problem. Lets talk about it.”
Malaika Jabali: “Obama has been elevated to silence Black dissent, not to empower us. Change my mind.”
Wagatwe Wanjuki: “Imagine thinking defund the police came out of wanting to “feel good” vs the pain and trauma of police violence and the hope of a better future…”
mk kaishian, “Defund the police isn’t a “slogan” it’s a well considered policy initiative. We mean what we say Mr. Yes We Can.”
Barack Obama stole the slogan Sí, Se Puede (Yes, We Can) from the United Farm Workers of America.
The same Barack Obama says that you lose people with “snappy” slogans like “Defund The Police”.
“Sí, Se Puede” has long been a UFW guiding principle that has served to inspire accomplishment of goals. The phrase is a federally registered trademark of the UFW.
