Friday, May 7, 2021. New York City – On Thursday, May 6, 2021, the New York Police Department (NYPD) arrested Douglas Young. According to the NYPD, Douglas Young murdered Mexican essential worker Francisco Villalva Vitinio on Monday, March 29th, 2021.
Francisco Villalva was a food delivery worker in this city. Food delivery workers are essential workers.
Francisco Villalva Vitinio was 29 years-old. He was originally from Xalpatláhuac, Guerrero; México.
“The death of our comrade Francisco affects the entire Deliveristas community. Today (May 6), the police arrested Douglas Young in relation to the murder of our comrade Francisco. We hope this is the step to deliver justice to the Villalva family, but also to implement security measures for us who run the same risks and dangers,” said Los Deliveristas Unidos on Facebook.
On Thursday, May 6, 2021, the NYPD 23rd Precinct said on Twitter, “Today our 23rd Pct @NYPDDetectives arrested Douglas Young for the murder of Francisco Villalva on March 29th inside Poor Richard’s Playground in #EastHarlem. We will continue to work tirelessly with the @ManhattanDA to ensure justice is served.”
Nick Garber reports on Patch.com, “Douglas Young, a 38-year-old Jamaica, Queens resident, was arrested just before 1 a.m. Thursday and charged with two counts of murder, two counts of firearm possession and robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.”
Nick adds, “Villalva Vitinio had been working to support his father in his native Mexico, according to a GoFundMe created by relatives after his death, which sought to cover funeral costs.”
According to some reports, Francisco Villalva Vitinio was taking a break and sitting on a bench inside Poor Richard’s Playground (East 109 Street and 3rd Ave) in East Harlem, Manhattan, when the Black man approached him and tried to steal his e-bike. After refusing to give up his electric bike, Douglas Young shot and killed Francisco Villalva.
Thieves are stealing electric bicycles, motorcycles and money from hard working food delivery workers.
According to patch.com, “In recent months, food delivery workers have been targeted with increasing frequency by robbers trying to steal their expensive e-bikes. The trend has accelerated as demand for food delivery has grown during the (coronavirus) pandemic.”
Thousands of deliveristas marched to demand justice for Francisco Villalva Vitinio.
On Wednesday, April 21, 2021, thousands of food delivery workers and their allies marched from Times Square to Foley Square in Manhattan, New York City. They demanded justice for Francisco Villalva Vitinio and better work conditions. Watch some videos below.

Deliveristas are organizing to change their working conditions.
Los Deliveristas Unidos say on losdeliveristasunidos.org, “We are organizing to change our working conditions.”
These are their demands:
1.The right to access restrooms from the restaurants.
2. The right to a living wage and a hazard pay.
3. Essential protections from e-bike robberies, wage theft and health and safety hazards.
4. The right to use a physical public space to eat, rest and be protected from extreme weather.
5. The right to organize.
