Tahanie says on her website, “Tahanie Aboushi is a quintessential New York story. Born into a Palestinian immigrant family that valued hard work, she learned at an early age that the system was designed to hurt some communities, and that liberty and justice were not for all. Tahanie understands that perception and prejudice can shape and distort how a person is treated. Recognizing how prevalent mistreatment can be for anyone considered an ‘other,’ Tahanie has dedicated her life to fighting for her communities, to ensure liberty and justice for all.”

Grand jury says force justified in TPD shootings; report and others point to missteps.

Jeff Burlew and Karl Etters reported on Tallahassee Democrat, “Grand jurors found that police officers acted lawfully and were justified in their use of lethal force in the shootings of Mychael Johnson, Tony McDade and Wilbon Woodard.

The grand jury also found that the officer who shot and killed McDade was wearing a body camera but did not turn it on, which is against TPD policy. “There is no footage from (the officer’s) camera because (he) failed to power up his camera that morning,”

McDade, a 38-year-old Black transgender man, was shot and killed May 27 at a Holton Street apartment complex. Just moments before the shooting, McDade fatally stabbed Malik Jackson 21, whose mother, Jennifer Jackson, lived next door on Saxon Street and was the object of his romantic obsessions.

The grand jury wrote that on May 26, McDade entered Jennifer Jackson’s apartment armed with a gun and a knife, which led to a violent confrontation with Malik Jackson and some of his family members.

Mutaqee Akbar, a Tallahassee attorney representing the McDade and Johnson families, said he understands the grand jury’s findings but believes police could have done more to avoid bloodshed.

“Now that we have the answers, we can move in a direction of healing for the families,” Akbar said. “I do think there’s a problem with policing when individuals can rely on law enforcement to help them commit suicide. And I think we need to take a different look at policing and the use of force.

He (Mutaqee Akbar) noted that police did not use deadly force in two recent incidents involving armed white people, including the owners of a strip mall who fired Aug. 27 on two Black men and one of their young sons as they dropped off a U-Haul and the Aug. 29 confrontation between protesters and a man with gun outside the Capitol.”

Malik Jackson

Abigail Jackson, a close aunt of Malik Jackson, who was stabbed to death by Tony McDade, discusses the case here.

The Lives and Deaths of Tony McDade and Malik Jackson

Adam Mahoney wrote on dissentmagazine.org, “McDade and Jackson’s tragically intertwined lives tell the story of a society that feeds on and maintains oppression through punishment, violence, and isolation. They also show us a way out.

On the morning of May 27, 2020, two days after George Floyd’s murder prompted an uprising against anti-Black state violence, thirty-eight-year-old Tony McDade was shot and killed by a Tallahassee police officer, after McDade fatally stabbed twenty-one-year-old Malik Jackson.

Around 1 a.m. that night, McDade took to Facebook Live to reflect on the difficulties he had faced in the months since leaving prison. Sitting in a chair covered with a heart-patterned blanket, he showed his new injuries to the camera and characterized the fight as spurred by jealousy and transphobia. McDade used he/him pronouns on Facebook, but in his livestream used she/her pronouns and his legal first name, Natosha, when talking about his childhood. “Nobody knew what was going on with Natosha,” McDade said. “Nobody knows Natosha was neglected.”
