The BDS Movement says, “The Friends of the IDF fundraise for projects benefiting the Israeli Army and soldiers, an occupation force that brutalises, humiliates, kills and maims Palestinians, commits widespread human rights abuses to maintain the illegal occupation and settlements, and flouts international law.”

mondoweiss.net reports that in September 2019, “the FIDF raised over $37 million at its annual gala dinner in New York City.”

“Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces Gala in New York City raises $37,000,000 to support Israeli soldiers & IT’S A TAX EXEMPT US CHARITY? On what planet is this right? Or does it make sense that it’s a tax write-off to contribute to the army that occupies Palestinian lands?,” tweeted Arab American Institute co-founder James Zogby in response to the gala.

After Far-Right Marchers Chant ‘Death to Arabs,’ New Israeli Government Bombs Gaza.

Jake Johnson writes on www.commondreams.org, “Just hours after far-right marchers chanted “Death to Arabs!” during a demonstration in the streets of Jerusalem, Israeli war planes bombarded the occupied Gaza Strip early Wednesday morning in the first series of airstrikes launched by the new government of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, a former IDF officer who once boasted that he has “killed a lot of Arabs.”

Jake adds, “While initial reports indicated that no Palestinians were killed in the new bombing campaign, the air raid intensified fears of a fresh wave of violence by the Israeli government just weeks after a tenuous cease-fire agreement paused Israel’s deadly 11-day assault on Gaza last month.”

6/15/2021. Palestinians and Black people will unite to celebrate Juneteenth 2021.

Black people, Palestinians and others will celebrate Juneteenth on Saturday, June 19, 2021.

Within our Lifetime • United for Palestine says on Facebook, “You cannot stand for Palestinian liberation without standing for Black Liberation. If you’ve been showing up for protests for Palestine, you should also be showing up for Black liberation. This Saturday on June 19th we will join the December 12th movement at Frederick Douglass Square in Brooklyn (Nostrand Ave and Jefferson Ave. A train to Nostrand Ave.) to commemorate Juneteenth. Join us as we wave the New Afrikan flag and show solidarity with our Black Comrades fighting for liberation. Our struggles are interconnected and our liberation is tied to one another.”

“Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day) is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it is now celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States, with increasing official recognition. It is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas.

President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1862 had officially outlawed slavery in Texas and the other states that had rebelled against the Union almost two and a half years earlier. Enforcement of the Proclamation generally relied on the advance of Union troops. Texas, as the most remote of the slave states had seen an expansion of slavery, and had a low presence of Union troops as the American Civil War ended; thus enforcement there had been slow and inconsistent prior to Granger’s announcement. Although the Emancipation Proclamation declared an end to slavery in the Confederate States, it was still legal and practiced in two Union border states (Delaware, and Kentucky) until the end of 1865, when ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution abolished chattel slavery nationwide in December. Additionally, Indian Territories that had sided with the Confederacy, namely the Choctaw, were the last to release those enslaved, in 1866.

Celebrations date to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas. It spread across the South and became more commercialized in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering on a food festival. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, it was eclipsed by the struggle for postwar civil rights, but grew in popularity again in the 1970s with a focus on African American freedom and arts. As of 2020, Hawaii, North Dakota and South Dakota are the only states that do not recognize Juneteenth, according to the Congressional Research Service.

Modern observance is primarily in local celebrations. Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing traditional songs such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, and reading of works by noted African-American writers, such as Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou. Celebrations include rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and Miss Juneteenth contests. Juneteenth is also celebrated by the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped from U.S. slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila, Mexico.”_Wikipedia.org

On Tuesday, June 15, 2021, the U.S. Senate passed a bill that would make Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States of America.
