Despite the rain, some people attended the event. Some people had umbrellas and some did not, but even so, the group of people remained throughout the event. Asian people, Palestinians, Latino people and Black people commemorated the 76th anniversary of the US bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.

Within Our Lifetime will have another demonstration. WOL says on social media, “This MONDAY august 16th (2021) 4 PM in front of the Zionist consulate on 42nd St & 2nd Ave Manhattan NYC. Join us for another Globalize the intifada action, where we will gather at the zionist consulate to stand against the normalization of Zionism, and to make it known that despite some Arab nations ceding to normalization efforts, the people of these nations have always been and will always be with the Palestinian people.”

Mexicanos Unidos had its weekly Plaza Tonatiuh. Every Sunday, street vendors sell Mexican food, Mexican clothes, art, and more.

The Academia De Mariachi Nuevo Amanecer were invited to the event and sang several songs. People loved them. People love mariachis. People love Mexican music. People love Mexico!

Palestinian women and men danced Palestinian music. They enjoyed it.

Nerdeen Kiswani, founder of Within Our Lifetime and Aide, co-founder of Mexicanos Unidos were two of the speakers.

On Friday, August 6, 2021, Within Our Lifetime said on Instagram, “Today we commemorate the 76th anniversary of the US bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 in what was the first act of genocide carried out with nuclear weapons in history.

The bomb, which contained the equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT, massacred tens of thousands of people instantly and destroyed an area of 5 square miles. By the end of 1945, the death toll in Hiroshima rose to an estimated 140,000 people.

Days later on August 9, 1945, President Harry Truman ordered the US war machine to drop a second atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, which resulted in the mass murder of another ~ 75,000 Japanese people.

In 1948, the same year as the Nakba and just three years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the zionist entity began its nuclear weapons program on stolen Palestinian land.

By the late 1960s, the zionist occupation had developed its own nuclear weapons after years of direct and indirect US and French support, and by 1975 israel approached the apartheid South Africa government with an offer to sell them nuclear bombs. While the deal didn’t go through, South Africa would go on to provide much of the yellowcake uranium that israel required to develop its nuclear arsenal.

When we look to both the past and the present, we see clearly that the global struggle to ban nuclear weapons is one in the same as the global struggle against racism, settler colonialism, imperialism and zionism.

This Sunday 8/8 we are gathering with @decolonizethisplace, @MexicanosUnidos and more in Sunset Park from 5-8 pm for a “Festival of Life & Struggle, Peace and Resistance” at 44th St. & 6th Avenue to commemorate Hiroshima and Nagasaki and link arms as we continue to fight to build a new world out of the rubble that has been left behind by our oppressors.”

Outraged at apartheid Israel’s crimes against Palestinians? Here are 5 things you can do.

Here are the 5 most effective things YOU can do to challenge this complicity and support the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equality:

  1. Work with progressive networks to pressure parliament and government to (a) end all military-security cooperation and trade (military funding in the US case) with apartheid Israel and similarly criminal regimes of oppression worldwide, (b) ban all goods/services of companies operating in Israel’s illegal colonial settlements; and (c) demand a UN investigation of Israeli apartheid.
  2. Mobilize pressure in your community, trade union, association, church, social network, student government/union, city council, cultural center, or other organization to declare it an Apartheid Free Zone (AFZ), ending all relations with apartheid Israel and companies that are complicit in its system of oppression.
  3. Boycott products/services of, and/or mobilize institutional pressure to divest from, Israeli and international companies and banks that are complicit in Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity. This includes all Israeli banks (Leumi, Hapoalim, etc.) and major multinationals such as: Elbit Systems, HP, G4S/Allied Universal, AXA, CAF, PUMA, Caterpillar, General Mills/Pillsbury, Hyundai Heavy Industries, JCB, Volvo, Barclays Bank, Alstom, Motorola Solutions, and CEMEX.
  4. Cancel all academic, cultural, sports, and tourism engagements in Israel or supported/sponsored by Israel (or its lobby groups and complicit institutions).
  5. Join a BDS campaign or a strategic Palestine solidarity group near you to act collectively and effectively.

Channel your anger and mobilize to dismantle apartheid and all forms of racism and oppression.
