9th Annual Indigenous Day Of Remembrance (PHOTOS/VIDEOS).

Thursday, October 13th, 2016. New York City – On Sunday, October 9th, 2016, it was the 9th Annual Indigenous Day Of Remembrance. It was a raining day, but rain did not stop Indigenous people and their allies to attend the event. #WaterIsSacred!

The Indigenous Day Of Remembrance is a yearly Indigenous event that remembers and honors the Indigenous ancestors whom suffered or were murdered by the invaders in 1492 and to the present. It also remembers all the African women and men that were enslaved, murdered and raped for the sake of profit. As the U.S. celebrates the memory of Christoper Columbus, the Indigenous community remembers the ancestral memory of loss as well as seeking healing and justice.

El Día de la Memoria Anual indígena es un evento anual indígena en el que se recuerda y rinde homenaje a los antepasados indígenas que sufrieron o fueron asesinados por los invasores en 1492 y hasta la actualidad siguen siendo oprimidos. The 9th Annual Indigenous Day of Remembrance was organized by Luis Sanakori Ramos, Maritza Feliciano-Potter, Brooke Keiahani Rodriguez.

This year we began a new tradition at #IDOR: The Burning of the Papal Bull Inter Caetera. Read here why.

This is a statement from Luis Sanakori Ramos: “I would like to thank everyone who came to the 9th Annual #IDOR or sent their prayers or sent their happy thoughts. Every year the gathering is unique with its own character.

#WaterIsLife was truly a living reality the first couple of hours. The altar was soaked as well as we who came to gather and represent our communities.

This year we especially honored and remembered the role of the Indigenous woman since 1492. We dared to remember the trauma they suffered but with the understanding that they fought to the end so we can live.

The gathering was going to end quickly due to rain. Then four amazing young Quechua young girls came to dance. Instantly the rain stopped. Then as we were going to end the circle, others poured in to pay their respects to the ancestors. Thus the end was not near. This would occur 4 times. What should have been the shortest IDOR gathering, it would become a 5 hour honoring circle.

On this Columbus Day I will remember how on the 9th Annual IDOR- the ancestors were honored and remembered no matter what, which gives me hope that one day in NYC- we will celebrate the ending of Columbus Day and prepare for the ultimate celebration.”
