Take down Christopher Columbus statues in New York City (PHOTOS).
Saturday, July 18, 2020. Brooklyn, New York City – Today I covered the event “The Vile identities of Christopher Columbus: A Teach-In.” The event was in Columbus Park, Downtown Brooklyn.
Organizers said Christopher Columbus is “a man who deserves no honors.”
Organizers say on Instagram, “We are community members (Black Boricua founder) who are demanding that all statues of Columbus are taken down by October 12th, 2020.
Columbus represents the oppression and violence of colonialism. We demand our city does better.
We also want to re-imagine our public spaces. We want a NYC where there are monuments to Black and Indigenous people/movements/ideas. We want spaces for people to heal, build communities and honor ancestors.
Next week: July 25th, 3PM – Columbus statue in Central Park.”
