Monday, August 31, 2020. New York City – Some Black people in USA accuse Adele of ‘Cultural appropriation’ because she is wearing Bantu knots and a Jamaican flag bikini on a Instagram post. Some people on social media say what Adele is doing is cultural appreciation, not appropriation. Most people support Adele.
I’m not Jamaican, but I have a Jamaican flag, I love Jamaican food and I love the Caribbean Parade in Brooklyn, New York City. Some of my friends are Jamaicans. Hopefully, I will travel to Jamaica in 2021.
Due to COVID-19, the 2020 West Indian Day Carnival/Parade in NYC was cancelled. Click the link to see photos from past years: https://www.javiersoriano.com/2020/08/25/2020-caribbean-parade-cancelled/
Instagram user sylvietese said on Adele Instagram post, “Wow. Just wow! I read comments and I am shocked at how silly people can be! Isn’t it funny that most British African and Caribbean commenters are actually happy that Adele is celebrating their culture, while most Americans are saying she is appropriating a culture?! Gosh! When will Americans learn to stop viewing others with their own warped belief that the world revolves around their opinions and standards? THIS IS THE UNITED KINGDOM. Not the United States. We actually do things differently here.”
Twitter user @RufusInDaHouse said, “Chill. It’s Notting Hill Carnival weekend in the UK. An event over 60yrs old. Everyone is encouraged to dress up regarding you’re age, background gender or ethnicity. It’s a good thing. Possibly something Black Americans don’t quite understand. #Adele”
Twitter user @ZureixNevies said, “Let me explain something to the Yankees. We Jamaican wear our flag as clothes, use our flag as head wrap. As long as you not stomping or burning our flag it’s all good. You can buy that same top at any store in JA. So stop feeling offended for us. Okay. #adele”
Twitter user @moonfuckedd said, “Dear Black Americans, y’all are not the the spokesmen for the black race, ethnically, Adele outfit and hairstyle is none of your business…pay attention to the shitt y’all got going on in the US #Adele”
Twitter user @amouraals said, “How are non-Jamaicans getting mad at Adele when Jamaicans aren’t even mad themselves. This is normal carnival attire. Let Adele sing HELLO PON DI ADA SIDE.”
@Tunnykvng on Twitter said, “Sometimes the Black Americans get outraged over nothing. There’s nothing wrong with Adele wearing a Jamaican-flag bikini top & African Bantu Knots on her head.
Africans love it. Jamaicans love it. So why are the AA pressed?
Who made them the spokespeople for the black culture?”
@iamdahmmie said on Twitter, “Dear Black Americans, we love the Banta knot and I don’t think Jamaicans are complaining about the bikini.
Deal with your insecurities and leave Adele tf alone!”
Twitter user @theswampzombie said, “Anyone who has ever been to carnival will know that this is how nearly every woman there dresses. Carnival is about celebrating a culture. This pic of #Adele is nothing more than that.Stop trying to cancel everyone when all they are doing is cultural appreciation not appropriation.”
