Friday, September 11, 2020. New York City – Today is the anniversary of 9/11 in Chile and in the United States of America.
Howie Hawkins said in a statement, “The September 11, 2001 attacks on the US have obscured “The Other 9/11,” the US attack on Chilean democracy in the US-backed coup on September 11, 1973. The two 9/11s are connected by what the CIA calls “blowback.” The CIA first used the term in describing the unintended negative consequences of the US and UK sponsored coup against the democratically-elected government of Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran in 1953. The September 11, 2001 attacks were blowback from decades of US intervention in the Middle East. That doesn’t justify the terrorism, but it does explain it. If we want peace and security for our nation, we should respect the peace and security of other nations.”
“When we think of 9/11 most people think of September 11,2001. But for many Chileans there is another 9/11. September 11,1973. On the morning of Tuesday, September 11th 1973, two jets launched a deadly attack on the Presidential Palace of La Moneda in the heart of Santiago, Chile. The result was fire, the suicide of President Salvador Allende and ultimately the death or disappearance of over three thousand people. According to the Chilean government, the number of executions and forced disappearances was 3,095. “Chile: The Other 9/11” pieces together the dramatic hour-by-hour events of the coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power and marked a turning point in the Cold War. Pinochet ruled Chile for 17 years. He died under house arrest on December 10, 2006.”_Kastistos2000
Lisa Savage for US Senate said on Twitter, “What victims of 9/11, first responders & their families endured was a horrific tragedy. What followed multiplied the tragedy: millions of lives destroyed & trillions squandered on endless war abroad & war on civil liberties at home. It’s time to end the wars & restore our rights.”
The Green Party US said on Twitter, “We remember and grieve for those who died on 9/11/2001. We also remember and grieve for those who were killed in their name. We remember who engineered and signed off on the “global war on terror” that still must be stopped.”
CODEPINK said on Twitter, “1 million dead Iraqis, 37 million people displaced, and spending $6 TRILLION on endless war is not taking things “pretty calmly”

Costs of War: After 9/11 Attacks, U.S. Wars Displaced at Least 37 Million People Around the World.
DemocracyNow.org reports, “As the United States marks 19 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, a new report finds at least 37 million people in eight countries have been displaced since the start of the so-called global war on terrorism since 2001. The Costs of War Project at Brown University also found more than 800,000 people have been killed since U.S. forces began fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Yemen, at a cost of $6.4 trillion to U.S. taxpayers. “The U.S. has played a disproportionate role in waging war, in launching war and in perpetuating war over the last 19 years,” says report co-author David Vine, a professor of anthropology at American University.”
