The celebration honoring NYC’s Indigenous roots is returning to Brooklyn. The Third Annual United Lunáapeew/Lenape Nations Pow Wow brings Native American dancers, drummers, food, vendors and more.
The free, two-day public event, welcomes Indigenous Lenape people, the original inhabitants of New York City, who were forced by White Europeans, the Democratic Party, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren (the two founders of the Democratic Party), and others to relocate to other places, back to their ancestral homelands to reunite and share their culture with us.
The Pow Wow is presented by the Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing Collective, the American Indian Community House and the Prospect Park Alliance.
“We are thrilled to join our partners at Prospect Park Alliance, American Indian Community House and the City in our work to bring together our Lenape communities from across Turtle Island. This Pow Wow serves as an educational message to the broader community, and a social and cultural message for us, the Lenape people. We want all to leave the Pow Wow with a deeper understanding about why we as contemporary Native Americans still follow our culture, practice our dances and share our songs today,” said George Stonefish, founder of Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing Collective.
“This free gathering brings Lenape peoples together in their ancestral homelands and welcomes all to experience Indigenous dancing, drumming, artistry, food and cultural traditions,” said the Prospect Park Alliance on September 17, 2026.
Prospect Park is on stolen land from the Lunáapeew/Lenape Nation. Prospect Park is located on Lenapehoking, the unceded ancestral homeland of the Indigenous Lunáapeew/Lenape people who were murdered, dispossessed and displaced by White Europeans. LAND BACK!
The Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing Collective needs our help to meet their $50,000 fundraising goal for this – second Pow Wow held in Prospect Park since 1972, and the third ever Lenape Pow Wow in New York City. Lenapehoking/Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing
Before New York City, there was Lenapehoking/Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing, the ancestral land of the Lunáapeew/Lenape people. Forcibly displaced by White European invaders, their land was stolen to create settler states. We live on stolen land. LAND BACK NOW!
Lenapehoking translated as ‘homelands of the Lenape’. The territory of the Lunáapeew/Lenape people before White Europeans invaders arrived was known to them as Lenapehoking, and it covered roughly the area between New York City and Philadelphia, including all of New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and part of the state of Delaware.
The name Manhattan derives from the Indigenous Lunáapeew/Lenape word “Manahatta.” Indigenous Lenape people—the original inhabitants of Manhattan and all of New York City—called the island Manahatta, which means “Hilly Island.”
White European invaders stole Manahatta and all of New York City from the Lunáapeew/Lenape people. White Europeans committed GENOCIDE and ETHNIC CLEANSING against Indigenous Lunáapeew/Lenape people in New York City and other cities.
Lenapehoking and Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing. Both terms refer to the ancestral homeland of the Lenape/Lunaapeew people, but they stem from different dialects of the same language.
Lenapehoking (Lënapehòkink) comes from the Unami dialect. It directly translates to “Land of the Lenape.” This is the term most commonly seen in modern land acknowledgments (like the Brooklyn Nature Days, the New York City Commission on Human Rights, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, etc.).
Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing comes from the Munsee dialect. It also translates to “Land of the Lunaapeew”. It is used by the Éenda-Lunaapeewáhkiing Collective.
Both names represent the exact same massive territory. White Europeans invaded the Lenape Nation, stole lands from Indigenous Lunaapeew people and committed genocide and ethnic cleansing against Lenape people. The ancestral Lenape homeland includes: the five boroughs of NYC (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island), other parts of New York state, southern Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
