Sexual Violence and Rape
Primary source documents confirm that sexual violence occurred under Columbus’s command, and he explicitly permitted or overlooked it among his men.
• The Michele de Cuneo Letter: A primary account written by a childhood friend of Columbus who accompanied him on his second voyage details the brutal rape of an indigenous Carib woman whom Columbus had captured and given to Cuneo as a slave.
• Sex Trafficking: In 1500, Columbus wrote a letter to a friend lamenting that girls as young as nine or ten were being bought and sold into sexual slavery, noting that “there are many dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten are now in demand.” While he framed it as a lament, critics point out it occurred directly under his administration.
War Crimes and Atrocities
By modern standards, Columbus’s actions in the Caribbean constitute systematic war crimes and crimes against humanity.
• The Bobadilla Report: In 1500, the Spanish Crown sent an investigator, Francisco de Bobadilla, to Hispaniola to investigate Columbus’s governance. The unearthed 48-page report detailed horrific brutality used to suppress both indigenous people and Spanish colonists.
• Massacres and Torture: Columbus routinely ordered the severing of limbs (hands, ears, noses) of indigenous people who failed to meet strict quotas for gold collection. He also used mass execution, public hangings, and hunting humans with attack dogs to suppress resistance.
Terrorism
While “terrorism” is a modern political term, historians note that Columbus used systemic terror as a deliberate governing tactic to subjugate the Taíno population.
• Psychological Subjugation: To prevent rebellion among a population that vastly outnumbered his men, Columbus ordered public spectacles of extreme violence. Dismembered bodies were paraded through villages to terrorize the local population into absolute compliance.
White Supremacy
His worldview was rooted in Eurocentrism and religious supremacy, which laid the structural groundwork for modern racism.
• Subjugation of Non-Christians: Columbus viewed indigenous peoples through a lens of absolute cultural and religious superiority. In his own journals, he noted upon his very first arrival that the native people were gentle and would make “excellent servants,” immediately viewing them as subjects for forced labor and conversion.
Slave trade
• The Transatlantic Slave Trade: Columbus initiated the transatlantic slave trade, shipping hundreds of Taíno people to Europe to be sold, establishing a racialized hierarchy where Europeans held absolute dominion over non-European peoples.
