On Sunday, August 16, 2020, 47-year-old Paul Pinkney was shot and killed on Ocean Ave and Parkside Ave, just outside Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Paul’s nickname was P-Funk and he also went by the alias Jordan Michael.

Paul was killed a few blocks from where Deshawn Reid was shot and killed on Friday, August 14, 2020. Deshawn was killed on Ocean Ave and Crooke Ave.

The New York Daily News says, “(Paul) was paying his respects to slain neighbor Deshawn Reid when he was blasted twice in the head on the edge of the park about 2:00 a.m.

“He was loved by everybody,” Pinkney’s niece Tyquasia Davis, 30, said. “Everybody just can’t believe this because he don’t mess with nobody, he don’t bother nobody. You know, he just drinks his beer or whatever and said hello to everyone, speaks to all the children. It’s just sad.””

A woman told me Deshawn was Jamaican. His mother was devastated.

Residents in the building where Reid lived have signs on their windows that says, “Black Lives Matter,” “Cancel Rent,” and “Cancel Rent Cuomo.”

There are some candles in front of his apartment building.

I have been covering Black Lives Matter rallies and marches for many years. Police officers and people in the same community are killing many Black men and Black women.

Reid’s mother, Hermena Moffatt, told the New York Daily News, ““All I know is that they called him out the house, somebody called his phone and he went downstairs,” said Reid’s mom, fighting back tears. “When he was there, a vehicle pulled up and fired one shot in his chest and killed him.”

“My son loved me to death!” she said as she gave sway to her grief. “He would have gave his life for me. (He) ran all my errands. Loved to give me hugs.”

“He loved to prank me, like run jokes and make me laugh. He was a kind and loving person,” she recounted.”

According to the New York Daily News, “Deshawn Reid, 28, was talking to a friend just steps from his building on Ocean Ave. near Crooke Ave. in Flatbush as a silver Nissan Pathfinder SUV laid in wait for him for about 20 minutes.

When Reid’s friend stepped away, someone inside the SUV rolled down a window and opened fire.

Reid was shot in the chest and staggered down the street, said sources and witnesses.

Cops and medics were called to the scene around 4:10 p.m. An ambulance crew rushed Reid to Kings County Hospital, but he could not be saved.

“He was a good, hardworking man. He takes care of his two sisters who are blind. He was a sweetheart,” said friend Whit Harris, 35. “He was about compassion.”

“He was an artist — an up-and-coming rapper and signer,” said Anthony Cardinez, 42.”

Police have made no arrests.

Ten shooting incidents, resulting in 13 victims, occurred after 11 p.m. on Aug. 14, law enforcement sources said.
