Sunday, October 9, 2022. Manhattan, New York City – On Sunday, October 9, 2022, the group NYC Indigenous Day of Remembrance celebrated the 15th Annual NYC Indigenous Day of Remembrance. The event was at 59th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan, New York City.
On Monday, October 12, 1492, Italian Christopher Columbus, accompanied by a group of Spaniards, arrived at an island called Guanahaní after crossing the Atlantic Ocean. They were lost and thought they were in the Indies (Asia), but in reality they were in what is now known as the American continent.
Christopher Columbus and other Europeans committed crimes against humanity. Christopher Columbus and his men enslaved many native inhabitants and subjected them to extreme violence and brutality. Christopher Columbus was a criminal.
The five statues of Christopher Columbus in New York City should be replaced with statues of Lenape People who are the original inhabitants of what is now New York City.
The five sculptures of Christopher Columbus in New York City are in these locations: Central Park and Columbus Circle in Manhattan, Columbus Square in Queens, Columbus Park in Brooklyn and D’Auria-Murphy Triangle in the Bronx.
The original inhabitants of New York City are the Lenape People. New York City is Lenapehoking. New York City will always be the land of the Lenape.
Lenape Indigenous people called the island “Mannahatta,” which may have meant “island of many hills.”
On September 12, 1609, Henry Hudson first set foot on Mannahatta, that today is Manhattan. European invaders stole Mannahatta, and what today we know as Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island. We live on stolen lands.
Instead of celebrating the life of a white supremacist and criminal (Christopher Columbus), thousands of people in the United States of America celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not yet a federal holiday, but as of 2022, the holiday is observed by states including Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota and Vermont, and others.
More than 100 cities have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day. Some of those cities are: Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, Phoenix and San Francisco.
Click here for a list of Indigenous People’s Day events happening across Indian Country (USA). I have a list of events in New York City here.
Democrat politicians control the government in New York City and New York state, but they have refused to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. They also have refused to replace the five statues of Christopher Columbus in New York City (people say democrats and republicans are the same).
Sanakori Aragauacuel Apito and Maritza Feliciano-Potter, the organizers of the 15th Annual NYC Indigenous Day of Remembrance say on Facebook that this is “An annual Indigenous event that remembers and honors the Indigenous ancestors whom suffered or were murdered by the invaders and colonizers in 1492 to the present day. We also remember and honor all the Indigenous peoples that were stolen, and enslaved for the sake of racist patriarchal profit on Turtle Island.
As the so called “U.S.A” celebrates the memory of Christopher Columbus, the Indigenous community remembers our ancestral memory of loss as well as seeking justice and healing from our collective ancestral trauma.”
For many years, I have been covering the Annual NYC Indigenous Day of Remembrance. For health problems, I was not able to cover the event this year.
These are some videos and photos from past years.
